I'm super excited to share this with you guys today!
We've needed a bigger filing cabinet for a while. I saw this one on craigslist and snagged it for $30 buckaroos. I was pretty stoked because I looked it up and it retails for $199 at Staples - pretty awesome deal right?
Well it's definitely functional, but not so aesthetically pleasing. So I took care of that with some wallpaper and a little Modge Podge!
I wanted to take pictures of my process but I needed two hands for most of it and Matt wasn't home while I worked on it. So I'll do my best to write out the steps I took in case any of you want to try it yourselves!
First, I took all the hardware off (duh). I'd give more details instructions but it will differ depending on how your filing cabinet is built. Then I measured the drawers and cut pieces of wallpaper about 1 inch larger than the drawer all the way around. I put Modge Podge right on the drawer with a foam brush and stuck the paper on using a credit card to smooth it and get rid of any bubbles. Once it dried, I used an exacto knife to cut off the excess. I just held the knife right up against the side of the drawer and slid it right down (or across for the top and bottom) and the edge was almost perfect. I thought this was easier than trying to cut a piece to the perfect size and center it perfectly, etc etc.
There's only one spot on the bottom right of the bottom drawer where it tugged a little resulting in an uneven edge, but this pattern is pretty forgiving so I'm okay with it! If your drawers can actually come out (mine don't), I would recommend laying them face down once they're dry and cutting the excess from behind. It's safer and will probably come out cleaner!
Then I just added another coat of Modge Podge and let it dry before adding on the new hardware. The absolutely gorgeous wallpaper was a FREE SAMPLE! I knew you could get free 4x6 wallpaper samples from big box stores, but I never knew higher end wallpaper distributors would send you LARGE samples for free or just the cost of shipping. It's a pretty awesome resource to know about! (And for those of you asking, the patterns in the Saturday Tidbits post were free wallpaper samples as well!) The new cup pulls cost a total of $8 at Home Depot and I had the Modge Podge on hand so this whole project cost me a whopping $38 bucks.
It's one of my favorite projects yet. I'd love to hear what you think!
Tomorrow I'll show you where this bad boy and my new desk are going to go!

I want to do that. What type of site should I look for when I'm looking for free samples?
ReplyDeleteHi Kat! Every wallpaper distributor's website I looked at listed their policy on samples. I saw a picture of this wallpaper, and Googled till I found a distributor that would send me a large enough sample.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully done! I have a plain tan 4 drawer file that is just crying out for some stylish work. Great job!

How Cool!! I have a box of super vintage fabric that I snagged from my 85 y.o. Grandmother's sewing room. I am so going to use it on this this project. All I need is a can of spray paint for the cabinet and handles....thanks for sharing.

Next time your in Colorado, come on by!!!
This looks wonderful now. I have an older cabinet that you've help me find the courage to tackle.
ReplyDeleteWe purchased a black 4-drawer file cabinet on Craigslist for $30.00 several months ago. Gotta love those deals. I really love and admire what you did to dress yours up. And I love that you replaced the handles too. Very nice job and lovely to look at.
ReplyDeleteLove that idea! I have a file cabinet sorely in need...so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI have an old beat up ugly 4 drawer cabinet that I have been tryingto figure out what I can do to make it not such an eyesore.....THANKS for the inspiration!!! what a wonderful idea!!!
ReplyDeleteHey! Don't really know how I landed here, but I'm loving your ideas. Very cute!
ReplyDeleteI am SO doing this! We just added an office to our home and I am in the process of decorating it. This is exactly what I want to do to our filing cabinets. Thank you so much for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteLove Love Love the filing cabinet!! And the pulls are my favorite. I have similar ones in my kitchen. I'm so going to give this a try!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern...I would really like to use it for another project. Could you please tell me the pattern name? I couldn't find it anywhere on your blog. Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI might do this one! I am now a follower!
ReplyDeletehttp://houseonashwelllane.blogspot.com/
what a fantastic idea! i need a filing cabinet but i don't want to get one because they are so blasted ugly!! i saw an ugly white one at a yardsale this weekend wish i would have seen this earlier. i'm thinking you could even spray paint the cabinet the color you wanted. (although black is great).
ReplyDeletethanks for the tip! i may have to link to this in the future!
Whoa! I thought you painted the file cabinet yourself! I was about to ask how long you've done it, but found out that you used a wallpaper and an application of Mod Podge. And I gotta say, you got fine taste. You gave it an oriental appeal.
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI love the design because it looks like a very special and unique filing cabinets. If all filing cabinets would be like that, I would try to collect as many as I can.
ReplyDeleteThis is SO awesome! I have a huge (aka "Ugly") 4-drawer 1 @ school & while I'm not sure the permanant solution would work, I'm going to look into magnetic sheets...
ReplyDeleteThink about how you want your file drawers to be organized. If a system comes to mind—bills in one drawer, tax information in another, et cetera-make notes on a pad of paper.
ReplyDeleteI love how the way this 3 drawer filing cabinet changed from simple to stunning. Was it hard to make it look like that?
